Pirates at the Falcons Opening Game

E-mail Print PDF

A highly committed but much depleted team showed up well on Sunday at the Falcons Tournament to mark the opening home game of the season.

We went unbeaten through the group stages with 4 wins and a draw with good contributions in both attack and defence from all the Pirates a number of whom were playing with injuries or just making come backs from injury. The problem was, however, that although we were winning we weren't playing that well  and probably would have struggled against better opposition.

A couple of subs turned up (thanks to Lesley and Kelly) giving us old folks the chance of a breather as we'd started with only 6 players. Still tough to get motivated, however, and in the end we struggled to get going in the final against a much younger Feel Good Foods team who won on a drop off after possibly the most bizarre refereeing decision yet seen at Falcons (note to the ref- you can't be offside in your own in goal area!!). In short, everyone worked hard and put a shift in but we couldn't really get 'up for it'.

Special mentions:

Lou and Tina worked hard on the wings but the selfish buggers inside didn't get the ball out to them enough!

Mark made a first competitive turnout for the Pirates after a really nasty injury and brought a bit of class to proceedings

Darren for turning out after injuring himself for the 4ths the day before and struggled on manfully

Christian made a couple of belting runs down the line and ended the day with three scores

Tony for getting the team together and turning out himself (and scoring) even with his 'hurty knee'

Lesley and Kelly for giving us all a rest!
